What Unit 1 covers

Unit 1 is the chemistry the rest of the course rests on. It starts with water: how its polarity and hydrogen bonding give it cohesion, adhesion, surface tension and a high specific heat. Then come the elements living things are built from and the four kinds of biological macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids): how monomers join by dehydration synthesis and split by hydrolysis, and how a molecule's structure decides what it does, from protein folding to the antiparallel strands of DNA.

Where students slip

  • Hydrogen bonds in water form between molecules. The bonds inside a water molecule are polar covalent.
  • Dehydration synthesis builds polymers and gives off water; hydrolysis uses water to break them apart. Under time pressure students swap the two.
  • Secondary structure comes from hydrogen bonds along the polypeptide backbone; tertiary structure comes from interactions between R groups.
  • The two strands of DNA are antiparallel: one runs 5′ to 3′, its partner 3′ to 5′.

The sets

Play this set opens the set in splycr, where you can read every question and host it for your class straight away. Hosting needs no account, and students join with the code on the board. A free account lets you copy a set and edit it.

The questions come from the Biology by Bradford flashcard bank, written by an IB and AP Biology teacher. Each one plays as multiple choice, and the wrong options are other answers from the same set.

Game modes that suit this unit

Every set plays in all eight modes. These two fit this unit best.

  • Boss Battle

Unit 1 is full of pairs that look alike under pressure: monomer and polymer, hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis, starch and glycogen. A wrong answer heals the boss, so a class that guesses loses ground, and students learn to read the question to the end.

  • Splycr

Every right answer in a row raises a student's multiplier, up to 3×, and one slip drops it back to 1×. With short definitions like these, it shows quickly who knows the vocabulary cold.
